Fashion across cultures

FASHION OF SRI LANKA
Oh wow I cannot believe we have reached the last blog post, as much sadness I share I’m really excited to write up my last blog post about the cultural clothing in my home country Sri Lanka! :D Sri Lanka is home to Endless beaches, timeless ruins, welcoming people, oodles of elephants, rolling surf, cheap prices, fun trains, famous tea and flavourful food describes Sri Lanka and last but not least the exotic cultural fashion.

So what are the Sri Lankan people mostly seen wearing? Sri Lankan people like to wear cotton clothes because of the heat. Most women wear a sari. Other women wear frocks and long pants. Men may wear trousers or sarongs and shirts. There is a unique style of batik design in Sri Lanka. Children may also wear western clothes. They wear school uniforms to school.

SRI LANKAN WOMEN CLOTHING
In Sri Lanka many married women are seen wearing a sari draped in the Indian style. But the most popular in Sri Lanka is the Kandyan style called Osaria. It looks very much like an Indian Sari but the difference is the fetching frill around the waist and in more pleated than flowing pallu (the end that hangs loose). Osarian Sari’s look very pretty and feminine.

Muslim women in Sri Lanka also wear saree’s however, they are mostly in long robes called Abayas. They come in many different colours but the colour they are seen wearing the most is black, and most of them use a shawl to cover their heads.

In some regions women wear tight-fitting, short-sleeved jacket with a wrap-around; or a full blouse which is partially tucked in at the front. There are also such pieces of clothes as redde and hatte. It is a modification of the Javanese Kabu kain. The redde is a 2.5 m long piece of sloth which is wrapped around the waist. The hatte is a linen blouse with a round or V-shaped neckline.

SRI LANKAN MEN CLOTHING

Men in Sri Lanka prefer to wear a traditional Sri Lankan sarong. The colours they choose, I would say, are often bright and vibrant. They pair with a shirt or  a T-shirt, a popular choice being the Batik shirt, and sometimes wear it with a belt. Sarong can be worn long, and if necessary- too hot for example, it can be made short by folding. A very handy thing.

There are several ways to wear a sarong. Sometimes men tie it and make a knot in front, in other cases they wrap it around like a skirt, and others put the end between the legs and tie it or tuck into the sarong (it turns out something like trousers).

Traditional clothing for special occasions for men is trousers and t-shirts. Sometimes they wear caps as well.
